# chat_not_enabled

> Radar chat is off for this zero-data-retention organization

| | |
| - | - |
| **HTTP status** | `403 Forbidden` |
| **Error code** | `chat_not_enabled` |
| **Resolve action** | `enable_chat` |

## What happened

The organization has zero data retention, and Radar chat is off for it. Chat stores each conversation as the user's own history, so for an organization with zero data retention it stays off until an owner or admin turns it on.

Reading and deleting existing conversations keeps working. Only starting a conversation, sending a message, or resuming a turn returns this error.

## How to fix

An owner or admin of the organization turns chat on. Once it is on, conversations are stored like any other organization's, and anyone can delete any of their conversations; a deleted conversation is removed, not hidden.

An owner or admin turns chat on:

```bash theme={"dark"}
curl -X PUT https://api.particle.pro/v1/organizations/{orgId}/privacy/chat \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer OWNER_OR_ADMIN_JWT" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"enabled": true}'
```

`GET /v1/organizations/{orgId}/privacy` shows the setting under `chat`.
